Doubts

I have bucketloads. I've started something new since i'm not thinking about the mss with SSE and i have no idea whether the chapter i've just written works at all.

You'd think at some point little things like this would become a tad clearer.

When?

I have my best writing buddy lending her wise eye to it as i type but until I have her verdict I'll be questioning everything. The opening. The end chapter hook. Does it work that they don't actually speak until the end of the chapter.

Doubts, doubts, doubts.

Anyone else got some?

  1. I'm on the doubt train with you Becca! Woo hoo! I'm trying for the desire pitch and my WIP is currently being written with the mindset that it's not good enough - not a good way to write lol! I've been reading a lot about conflict lately and I'm now so completely in doubt that my work has any conflict whatsoever and I'm reconsidering submission and would like to retract all pieces ever to come in contact with human eyes!

  2. I think we all suffer from doubts. It's probably a good thing... sort of. I mean... if we thought everything we wrote was brilliant, we wouldn't be looking at how to improve.

And btw... it was a fabulous chapter! At least in my humble opinion!

  3. I've got horrible doubts at the moment. I knew the first few chapters of my 'vineyard' story were terrible. Until it came to editing time (now!!) I didn't realise how terrible!

Rach has already said your work is great, so now you have to stop doubting yourself :-)

  4. Definitely suffering from a plague of doubts - I'm thinking about pitching my WIP at the RNA conference and all I can think is 'it's a crap idea and you're going to hate it' - not really a selling line to an editor :-)

(Oh and Jo's story isn't terrible either :-)

  5. Yep, I've got doubts. All the time! Like you I'm not thinking about the ms that's under consideration but wondering if what I'm writing now is any good at all. I think that's just part and parcel of being a writer.

You know what we need? An editor! Now all they need to do is realise they need us... :-)

  6. Looks like i'm not the only one...

Lacey good luck for the desire pitch, the SSE one was scary but fun.

Mwah for the nice things about my chapter Rach!

Thanks for the positivity Joanne and I'm sure Lorraine's right about your story.

LOL Lorraine, i do think you need to work on the sales line..

Jackie, here's to an editor for all. And soon... excellent, a cyber toast and it's not even 9am...

  7. Hey, Becca.
Doubts? Yes! Sadly, they never go away, no matter how many books you write. And in some ways, I think that's a good thing. I mean, it never hurts to wonder if you've done the very best you can. I'm with Rachel in that doubts make you reach for a higher star every time!

And best of luck with that SSE!
